Olympic Pavilion Charette / Spacemakers 2010
What is Spacemakers?Spacemakers is a new annual event that Archus is organizing. It is an opportunity for Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning and ENDS students to work on a collaborative, out-in-the-real-world project.
This year we will be starting off big. We are going to design and exhibit a pavilion in downtown Vancouver during the Olympics.
What Kind of Pavilion?
The basic program for the pavilion will be to provide shelter from the winter rains, but besides that the charette on November 8th is a chance to let your creative little brains go wild imagining what this thing will be. There will be some design requirements, of course, since this is a real structure that will actually be constructed, and there is a theme that we are interested in exploring; beyond that you are free to design whatever you wish. We encourage you to be daring and innovative in your proposals.
What Happens at the Charette?
The charette will be an intense, 24 hour design session. We will provide you with some basic model construction materials, but you will need to bring cutting, drawing and gluing tools. We may or may not have food for you, so pack a lunch unless we tell you otherwise. In the morning we will hand out information about the site and design requirements. There will be some presentations from our industry sponsors about the capabilities and limitations of the materials that we will be using. The rest of the time will be free for you to get creative, have fun, and work in interdisciplinary teams on a quick design. You will need to prepare some sort of presentation for your concept, but there will be no formal critique of what you create; thus it is a great chance for you to try out some things that you wouldn't dare try during a design studio.
What Happens After the Charette?
A winner will be announced shortly after the charette. The winning design will then be developed by the core Spacemakers team and volunteers into something buildable. With the help of sponsors we will construct the pavilion, and then have it erected downtown Vancouver for the full Olympic period of February 11 - 28, 2010. We will also be making an intense effort to generate publicity for the project. Hopefully your design will end up being broadcast around the world thanks to the Olympic media attention, and published in industry journals.

What is a ‘Hub’?
A Hub is a shared work space with a dynamic cafe-like culture that facilitates creativity, collaboration, and social innovation. Often a social enterprise itself, a Hub is comprised of a diverse interdisciplinary membership base, ranging from freelance designers to small social enterprises to mid-size NGOs and green businesses. Hubs include shared amenities like meeting spaces, social/event spaces, cafe/bar, business equipment, kitchen, telecommunications, etc.
There are a number of organizations and individuals from the Vancouver business community, arts community, non-profit community, and academic community keenly interested in starting or joining a hub. Ideally, a Vancouver Hub would include an element of all of these communities, with a common social / sustainability mandate.
Who should attend this meeting?
If you have a vision / idea for what you would like to see in a Vancouver Hub – please come prepared to share this in the discussion portion of the evening. If you are curious about how a Vancouver Hub might support or enhance your work – you are welcome to listen, ask questions and learn more.
Who will be joining us?
We are extremely fortunate to have some Hub "veterans", who will offer their inspiration, lessons from past experiences and practical feedback:
* Jeremy Murphy, Director of Sustainability Solutions Group, collaborator on Halifax Hub
* Bill MacEwen, former owner of Workspace
* Jay Catalan, Founder of The Network Hub
* Michelle Hoar, Business Director of The Tyee
* Kevin Millsip, Director of Genius, former Director of Check Your Head
We strongly feel that Vancouver needs a Hub to incubate and catalyse social and ecological innovation in our city. If you share this aspiration, we look forward to meeting you, and collaboratively exploring a common vision.
RSVP to hubvancouver@gmail.com.
Regards,
Sustainability Solutions Group, Recollective, The Natural Step Canada, Vancouver Design Nerds, Workben.ch, Building Opportunities with Business, The Tyee, Genius, The Hub, Environ, and many more...
