EGB Design Comp

My name is Ivan Tang and I'm a senior undergrad engineering student at UBC. I'm an active member of the UBC Emerging Green Builders (UBC EGB). Some members of UBC EGB wish to enter this year's Natural Talent Design Competition (NTDC) with one or more interdisciplinary student teams, depending on the amount of interest. This year's Competition is a little different and a lot more exciting! The goal is to design an affordable, 800 square foot, green home for an elderly client in the Broadmoor, New Orleans neighborhood. The home is to achieve Platinum certification under the LEED for Homes rating system with a number of requirements. Examples include: a $100,000 construction budget, finish-floor elevation must be at least 7 feet above grade for flood protection, resistance and resiliency to withstand 150 mph hurricane winds, and it must be ADA compliant. Winners at the national level will see their project constructed in New Orleans and subsequently monitored, after which the final grand prize will be awarded according to the best performer.

This is an amazing opportunity to collaborate on an interdisciplinary project with students of different expertise. The team or teams carrying out this integrated design process would ideally involve students from at least architecture, engineering and community planning. UBC EGB has been in touch with the Kwantlen EGB group. There is already strong interest from Kwantlen interior design students to collaborate with UBC students to enter the NTDC but we require interest from architecture students. Architectural expertise is a critical component to submissions. Please forward this message to architecture students and others who you think may be interested. Alternatively, please post this on the ARCHUS blog.

For interested students, please contact me at ivanyhtang@gmail.com as soon as possible. We would prefer to register by March 1 as the cost increases thereafter.

Thank you,
Ivan
